Rain does not have to cancel a day in Granada. The city has enough museums, exhibitions and cultural spaces to plan a full itinerary without relying on viewpoints or the Albaicín’s steep cobbled lanes. The most practical approach is to pick two or three nearby places and check their opening times before you leave.
Not every visit works the same way: some museums close on Mondays, others split morning and afternoon hours, and certain activities require timed tickets. This selection prioritises venues with official information and plans you can carry out under cover.
Quick answer: with 2 hours, pick one museum in the core (Casa de los Tiros or the Lorca Centre) or a short show at Hospital Real / Palace of Charles V if you are already nearby. With half a day, pair the centre with Parque de las Ciencias or Alhambra palace museums, accepting outdoor stretches. Calendar matters: Monday closes the Park, Casa de los Tiros and Lorca Centre; Hospital Real publishes hours Monday to Saturday (not Sundays). On Sundays, the Park opens only until 15:00. Free admission rules: free plans guide. Overview: what to see in Granada.
Before you leave (60-second checklist)
- Day of the week: Monday, Sunday or public holiday? Adjust the Park, Hospital Real and Junta museums.
- Official website hours: do not rely on old screenshots or outdated blog posts.
- One area per block: core, Darro, Cartuja, Alhambra or science campus — not all five.
- Footwear: wet cobbles and hills; avoid smooth soles.
- Timed ticket: Nazarí Palaces visits go ahead in rain; allow extra arrival time. Guide: Alhambra and official alternatives.
- Driving: if you park outside and walk in, check LEZ and car parks before moving in heavy rain.
Group the day by area (fewer rainy transfers)
| Area | What fits | Transfer | Rain caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core (Cathedral–Realejo) | Casa de los Tiros, Lorca Centre, Cathedral/Royal Chapel (paid) | 10–15 min walk | Cobbled streets: grippy soles |
| Darro (Carrera del Darro) | Archaeological Museum (Casa de Castril) | Climb from Plaza Nueva | Slippery outdoor approach |
| Cartuja / Triunfo | Hospital Real (Charles V show until 17 Jan 2027) | Bus or taxi from centre | Indoors; less hill walking than Albaicín |
| Alhambra | Palace of Charles V, free-access museums† | C30/C32 bus or taxi | Precinct has outdoor sections |
| Science campus | Parque de las Ciencias | Metro (line 1) or bus from the centre | Long indoor block |
† Different from timed Nazarí Palaces tickets.
Three ready-made combinations
Combo A — 2 hours in the core
Choose one main visit; only chain two if both open in consecutive slots and you accept a brisk pace.
- Option 1: Casa de los Tiros (45–75 min).
- Option 2: Lorca Centre — one exhibition slot only, morning or afternoon (45–60 min).
- Option 3: Hospital Real show (45–60 min) if you are near Cartuja/Triunfo and hours fit 11:00–14:00 or 17:30–19:30 (Mon–Sat).
Combo B — Half day (core + science)
- Morning: core block (Casa de los Tiros + Lorca Centre or Archaeological Museum if the Darro approach feels OK).
- Afternoon: Parque de las Ciencias (base museum; add BioDomo/Planetarium only with a confirmed session).
Combo C — Full rainy day
- Parque de las Ciencias as the anchor (3–4 h with a break).
- Short second visit in the centre or Hospital Real exhibition if evening hours work.
- Do not end with viewpoints or the steep Albaicín; save those for dry weather.
What to do if it rains and you have 2 hours
- Casa de los Tiros Museum (Calle Pavaneras 19): a focused tour through Granada’s history. Free entry for EU citizens according to Granada Tourism; confirm who qualifies and today’s hours on the official source.
- Federico García Lorca Centre (Plaza de la Romanilla): exhibitions near the Cathedral. Price depends on the specific activity; do not assume everything is free.
- Charles V quincentenary exhibitions (autumn–winter 2026): if they overlap with your trip, the Hospital Real or Palace of Charles V allow a short, free visit within published hours (see the temporary section below).
Casa de los Tiros and the Lorca Centre are a few minutes apart, but both together usually exceed two hours at a calm pace. With that window, skip Parque de las Ciencias: travel time and BioDomo or Planetarium capacity do not fit.
What to do if you have half a day
A realistic order combines one core block and one longer block:
- First slot (centre): Casa de los Tiros; Lorca Centre or the Hospital Real exhibition; optionally the Archaeological Museum (Carrera del Darro) if the pedestrian approach feels manageable — the galleries are indoors, but the climb from Plaza Nueva can be slippery in the rain.
- Second slot: Parque de las Ciencias (main museum) or, for heritage, the Palace of Charles V and Patronato museums with free access under current conditions — always checking outdoor sections of the Alhambra precinct.
For literary context, our Lorca in Granada guide and GRN Lorca route work better on a dry day; in the rain, prioritise the Centre and only visit the Huerta if you confirm it is open that day.
If you are buying several tickets, compare Granada Card (includes general Parque de las Ciencias admission, not BioDomo or the Planetarium). For conditional free entry, cross-check free things to do in Granada.
If it rains on a Monday
Monday breaks the most plans: Parque de las Ciencias, Casa de los Tiros and the Lorca Centre are usually closed (except published exceptions). Stronger priorities:
- Hospital Real exhibition (until 17/01/2027): published Monday to Saturday, 11:00–14:00 and 17:30–19:30, free admission — often the best rainy Monday bet during the centenary period.
- Alhambra — Palace of Charles V (centenary show and museums): check the Patronato calendar; the precinct remains partly outdoors.
- Cathedral, Royal Chapel or other paid monuments: may open on their own schedule but are neither free nor walk-in by default; verify ticket desks and booking on official sites before you travel.
Save the Park, Casa de los Tiros and Lorca Centre for Tuesday or later. The trip planner helps reshuffle without wasting a timed Alhambra ticket on another day.
If it rains on a Sunday
- Parque de las Ciencias: open, but only 10:00–15:00 — arrive early if it is your main plan.
- Casa de los Tiros and Lorca Centre: usually open on Sunday hours (morning or reduced slot); confirm officially.
- Hospital Real (Charles V show): published hours are Monday to Saturday; do not count on this show on Sundays.
- Palace of Charles V museums: check the Patronato; they may work if hours align.
Sundays also trigger conditional free admission elsewhere: see free things to do in Granada without assuming walk-in access.

BioDomo and the Planetarium have limited capacity and their own conditions (booking, session times, possible restrictions). Do not promise availability on any given day: check on the day of your visit via the Park’s fares and opening hours. Also check our events calendar for temporary shows at the Park.
Casa de los Tiros Museum
Address: Calle Pavaneras 19. Museum focused on Granada’s history, with galleries on travellers, industrial arts and costumbrismo.

Fine Arts Museum and Museum of the Alhambra (Palace of Charles V)
Both are visited at the Palace of Charles V inside the Alhambra precinct. Galleries are indoors; reaching the complex involves outdoor walking between access points.
According to the Patronato, access to these museums may be free under conditions different from Nazarí Palaces (timed ticket). Check hours, works and centenary exhibitions on opening times and prices.
Federico García Lorca Centre
Address: Plaza de la Romanilla s/n. Archive, library and exhibitions; it does not replace Huerta de San Vicente.
- October exhibition hours (reference): Tue–Sat 11:00–14:00 and 17:00–20:00; Sun and public holidays 11:00–14:00; closed Mondays.
Price and free admission depend on the specific exhibition or performance. Confirm on the Centre’s practical information page. More context in our Lorca in Granada guide and GRN URBAN’s events calendar.
Charles V exhibitions (temporary autumn–winter 2026 recommendation)
- Hospital Real: "Granada. Imperial Capital" — Mon–Sat 11:00–14:00 and 17:30–19:30, free until capacity (9 Oct 2026 – 17 Jan 2027). Sundays: not in this show’s published hours.
- Palace of Charles V: "The royal palaces of the Alhambra" — 9–14 Oct 10:00–20:00; from 15 Oct 10:00–18:00; free (same dates). Reaching the precinct may involve outdoor sections.
Venue page: Palace of Charles V. Full guide and two-venue plan: Charles V in Granada. To walk the historical frame when the weather improves: Charles V route through Granada.
Paid monuments with interiors (only if hours are confirmed)
The Cathedral, Royal Chapel or Cartuja can be a rainy fallback, but they are paid entries with their own calendars and, in some cases, slots or conditional free admission that requires booking. Do not treat them as spontaneous rain plans without checking the ticket desk that day; see official sites and conditional free admission.
Family plans
- Parque de las Ciencias as the main anchor: allow time for the base museum before adding BioDomo or the Planetarium.
- Casa de los Tiros if you want an urban museum without travelling to the science campus.
- Pair with our free plans guide only for indoor venues or spaces with confirmed hours; viewpoints and the steep Albaicín are not a rain backup with children.
Check the events calendar for workshops or children’s activities with a date and indoor venue; do not invent programming without a published listing.
What not to do in heavy rain
- Slippery routes: Darro paths, Albaicín climbs or viewpoint itineraries with wet steps and no continuous handrail. Our Albaicín guide assumes fair weather on outdoor stretches.
- Hiking or high mountain: a Sierra Nevada trip is not a substitute for a museum day; mountain conditions worsen visibility and safety when the city is already wet.
- Very exposed itineraries: do not describe as “all indoors” visits that require long outdoor stretches between halls (Alhambra with Nazarí Palaces, Generalife, Huerta de San Vicente gardens, etc.). If you have a timed ticket, see official Alhambra access and alternatives.
To reshuffle the full trip, use the Granada trip planner; for a dry day afterwards, see Granada in one day or our published routes.
Frequently asked questions
Is Granada worth visiting in the rain?
Yes, if you adjust expectations: prioritise museums and exhibitions with confirmed hours instead of viewpoints and steep routes. A well-planned rainy day can be more comfortable than forcing the Albaicín on wet cobbles.
Can you visit the Alhambra in the rain?
With Nazarí Palaces tickets the visit goes ahead, but there are outdoor sections and uneven paving. Without a ticket, Palace of Charles V museums can be a partly indoor option; check the Patronato and do not mix up access routes.
What is free in Granada when it rains?
Several Junta museums (Casa de los Tiros, Archaeological, Fine Arts in the Palace) offer EU free admission under published conditions. Charles V centenary shows at Hospital Real and the Palace are free until 17/01/2027 within published hours. Details: free things to do in Granada.
Is Parque de las Ciencias open on Mondays?
Generally no: official hours show Mondays closed except exceptions. Plan the Park Tuesday to Sunday.
Are BioDomo and the Planetarium included in the museum ticket?
No. They are supplements with their own fares and capacity (€7 and €3.50 at published standard rates). Confirm your session on the day.
Where to go with children when it rains in Granada?
Parque de las Ciencias is the largest indoor option; in the centre, Casa de los Tiros or a short Hospital Real exhibition if hours fit. Avoid chaining long transfers.
What to do on a rainy Sunday in Granada?
Parque de las Ciencias (until 15:00), Casa de los Tiros or the Lorca Centre if open, and palace museums per the Patronato. The Hospital Real show is not on published Sunday hours. Plan without Hospital Real that day.
What to do on a rainy Monday in Granada?
Prioritise the Hospital Real show (Mon–Sat) or the Palace of Charles V; leave the Park, Casa de los Tiros and Lorca Centre for another day.
